September abroad? This is how you experience the return to routine in London, Berlin and Rome

September arrives with its fresh air, the smell of new books and that feeling that summer is saying goodbye to give way to new opportunities. While in Granollers we set the alarm again, have you ever wondered how this “starting over” is experienced in other places in Europe?

Today we invite you on a quick trip. We will pack our bags to discover how they resume routine in the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy. And why these places? Because at ELI we learn their languages and want to know more about them. Let’s go!

London: The charm of ‘Back to School’ and the return to the Tube

In the United Kingdom, September is synonymous with ‘back to school’. School uniforms once again fill the streets and the atmosphere is charged with renewed energy. Summer, often shy, gives way to a welcoming autumn, with parks dyed in ochre tones and pubs once again becoming the perfect refuge after the working day.

In the office, it’s time to ‘get back in the swing of things’. Holiday chatter gives way to planning for the final quarter. The Tube is back to its usual buzz and there’s a sense of productivity and new beginnings in the air.

Phrases you’ll hear in London:

  • “Did you have a good holiday?”
  • “Time to catch up on emails.”
  • “Autumn is coming.”

Berlin: Efficiency, Herbst and the pleasure of getting back to order

If there’s one word that defines the return to routine in Germany, it’s Ordnung (order). After a summer of lakeside getaways and festivals, September brings with it a return to structure and efficiency. Autumn, or Herbst, is a beautiful season in cities like Berlin, where people take advantage of the last days of sunshine on the terraces of the Biergärten.

While Munich’s famous Oktoberfest gets the spotlight, there’s a “get to work” energy throughout the country. At work, projects are taken up with vigor and concentration is valued. The expression “Wieder an die Arbeit!” (Back to work!) is heard with a mixture of resignation and determination. It’s the perfect time to focus and be productive.

Key vocabulary in Berlin:

  • Der Herbst: Autumn.
  • Die Arbeit: Work.
  • Der Feierabend: The end of the working day, an almost sacred moment.

Rome: The art of ‘Rientro’ and the last sip of summer

In Italy, the end of August is marked by Ferragosto, the great summer holiday. That’s why September is the month of ‘Rientro’, the great return. The cities, which seemed sleepy and empty, are regaining their chaotic vitality. Rome is once again vibrating with the sound of classic Vespas and the aroma of early morning espresso.

For Italians, returning is not a drama, it is a social event. It is the time to meet colleagues at the office for a caffè and tell anecdotes from the summer. Although nostalgia for the sea is inevitable, there is a positive energy, that of ‘ricominciare’ (starting over). The mild temperatures are taken advantage of to dine on the terraces and a kind of second start of the year is experienced.

Expressions you will hear in Rome:

  • “Allora, come sono andate le vacanze?” – Well, how were your holidays?
  • “Si ricomincia!” – Let’s start over!
  • “Ci prendiamo un caffè?” – Shall we have a coffee?
