Supporting English learning from home: tips for families

Many families wonder how they can help their children with English if they themselves sometimes do not master it. At ELI, we know that family support is key for children to feel motivated and confident in their learning process. That is why today we share some simple and effective ideas to support from home, without having to speak English.

1. Interest and conversation

When you come to pick up your child from school or when they arrive home, asking “What did you do in English today?” or “What new word did you learn?” may seem simple, but it has a big impact. Showing interest reinforces the idea that learning English is important and valued at home.

2. Visual routines

Printing and hanging small vocabulary lists on the fridge, writing sentences on post-its or decorating a part of the room with English words helps to make the language present naturally. You don’t have to understand everything: visual exposure is very powerful.

3. Listen and watch together

Watching cartoons or short videos or listening to songs in English is a fun way to familiarize yourself with the language. Sharing these moments as a family creates a positive bond with learning.

4. Celebrate small successes

When your child tells you a new word or expression or understands a sentence, celebrate it! Emotional reinforcement is as important as academic. A “That’s good!” or a “I’m proud of you, keep it up!” can make all the difference.
